Kid-Friendly Wineries in McLaren Vale & the Fleurieu

At a glance

  • For wildlife: woodstock
  • For a maze: Maxwell Wines
  • For lawns: Paxton Wines
  • For space to spread out: Lloyd Brothers
  • For lunch + cellar door: Wirra Wirra
  • For an actual kids’ tasting: Kimbolton Wines, Langhorne Creek

Yes, you can still do wine country with kids.

You just need to choose the cellar doors wisely.

Woodstock

Possibly one of the easiest places to put on a family McLaren Vale itinerary.

Alongside the wine, Woodstock has a wildlife sanctuary with rescued native animals, plus its lawns and casual dining offering at selected times.

Translation: there’s something here that isn’t juuuuuust a wine glass.

Maxwell Wines

The big drawcard for younger visitors is the Maxwell Maze, a conifer labyrinth on the property.

The local visitor centre currently recommends Maxwell as one of McLaren Vale’s kid-friendly cellar doors, along with its lawns and shaded areas.

Wirra Wirra

Big gum trees, lawns, Harry’s Deli and the enormous Angelus Bell make Wirra Wirra much easier to navigate as a family than a tiny, quiet tasting room.

The venue is currently officially listed as family-friendly, with gardens and outdoor space as part of the cellar-door experience.

Paxton Wines

Another one where the outdoor setting does a lot of the heavy lifting.

Paxton is currently recommended by the local visitor centre for its picnic lawns and room for children to explore.

Lloyd Brothers

Open lawns, a relaxed setting and resident geese make this another current family pick from the McLaren Vale visitor centre.

Kimbolton Wines

A little further afield in Langhorne Creek, but this deserves a mention for doing something specifically for the kids rather than simply allowing them to tag along.

Kimbolton currently offers a Kids’ Savoury Sensory Sampler, pairing Bickford’s cordials with kid-friendly snacks and an activity pack. Very clever.

The Sanbis tip

Two cellar doors with kids can feel like a lovely day.

Six cellar doors with kids can feel…Less than ideal.

Choose one or two that genuinely suit families, book lunch somewhere with space, then head for the coast.

Everyone wins.
